CITY MANAGER:

Waste Management Rate Increase:

After review of Waste Management’s books to verify the calculation methodology on April 26th, the Proposition 218 noticing will be sent out to Corning property owners informing them of a proposed rate increase in the amount of 5.47%.  A 94-gallon residential cart will increase from $24.27 to $25.60 per month.

 

Northern California Cities’ Self Insurance Fund (NCCSIF):

I attended a Northern California Cities’ Self Insurance Fund (NCCSIF) meeting on April 21st in Rocklin, CA.  During the meeting board members voted to approve a one-year extension with Sedgwick, the third-party administrator for Workers’ Compensation claims, and to issue an RFP.

 

PUBLIC WORKS:

Community Event/Street Impact:

Corning Tuesday Night Market:

  • Corning Tuesday Night Market will be occurring on this upcoming Tuesday, May 3, 2022 starting at 5:00pm and going until 8:00pm. Solano Street will be closed between 3rd Street and 6th Street for the event.  Solano Street closure will begin at approximately 4:00pm to prepare for the event and will re-open once the event has finished.

 

Water and Sewer Service Repairs:

  • Staff is aware of 6 water service leaks throughout the City and are addressing them as fast as we can.
  • Staff is also aware of 2 sewer service laterals that need to be repaired and will be addressing them as staff is available.

 

Fire Season Preparation:

Public Works Staff has continued to mow and place fire breaks on City property to prepare for this upcoming fire season.  We anticipate finishing this work next week.

Flag Football Signups:

We currently have up to 40 players for Corning Flag Football.  The community has through the weekend to register.  Spread the word if you know anyone that might be interested, it is CO-ED.

 

May 3rd Corning Tuesday Evening Market:

The next Tuesday Night Market is this Tuesday, May 3rd, it will be the perfect timing to do some Mother’s Day shopping.  The newest nursery, Golden State Greenhouse will be in attendance with their beautiful hanging baskets, Corning Recreation will be doing a fun Mother’s Day craft at our table (thank you Karen), Glenn County Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer any of your gardening questions, and Orland Raceway will be displaying numerous race cars to check out.  These are just a few of the highlights of the event, there will be so much more.  Come join us, you don’t want to miss out.

 

June 11th Weekend Holistic Playground Paint Party at Clark Park:

The Holistic Playground Paint Party at Clark Park is scheduled for the weekend of June 11th, more details to come soon.

 

POLICE DEPARTMENT:

Patrol:

In addition to responding to 120 calls for service, a total of 17 officer reports were taken and there were 86 officer-initiated incidents, including 43 traffic stops.  Officers made 8 misdemeanor and 3 felony arrests.  Officers issued 14 citations, of which; 9 were misdemeanors, and 5 were infractions during the period of April 7, 2022, through April 13, 2022.

 

Training:

Officers continue to participate in POST Portal Training and Lexipol Daily Training Bulletins.  Other POST on-line training continues for Patrol and Dispatch personnel.

FIRE DEPARTMENT:

Corning Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) Call Volume:

The Corning Volunteer Fire Department responded to 14 calls for service last week, they consisted of:  7 medicals, 1 fire, 1 traffic collision, 2 investigations, and 3 public service.

 

The Orland, Capay, Artois, Butte City, Bayless, Glenn Codora  Volunteer Fire Department Call Volumes:

The Orland, Capay, Artois, Butte City, Bayliss, Glenn Codora Volunteer Fire Departments were dispatched to a combined total of 29 calls for service last week, they consisted of:  13 medicals, 8 fires, 3 traffic collisions, 4 public service, and 1 investigation.

 

Chief’s Message:

The Corning Volunteer Fire Department and the City of Corning lost a beloved member of the Community this past week.  Rest in Peace Chief Pryatel, you were a great friend, mentor, teacher, and inspiration to us all.
