CITY MANAGER:

Special thanks to all those involved and in attendance at the Christmas Parade, Spaghetti Dinner, Breakfast with Santa. It was an enjoyable day full of events in Corning!

Meetings:

  • Next City Council Meeting: January 14, 2024, at 5:30 p.m.

Miscellaneous:

  • There are a number of events scheduled for the holiday season. Be sure to check out the City of Corning Recreation and Chamber of Commerce webpages and social media.
  • City Hall will be closed on Tuesday, December 24th and Wednesday, December 25th for the Christmas Holiday.
  • City Hall will be closed on Wednesday, January 1st, 2025, New Years Day Holiday.
  • The 2nd City Council Meeting in the Month of December (12/24/24) has been canceled.
  • Thank you to the Corning Chamber of Commerce and Public Works Department for their efforts to decorate the town in preparation for the Holiday Season and Events.
  • There were about 50 people in attendance at the bench dedication on Monday, December 9th at the Flournoy Community Park. Thank you, Delores May, for your countless contributions to the community of Corning for many years.
  • I attended the NCCSIF Board of Directors meeting on Thursday in Rocklin.

CITY CLERK:

Congratulations to all the elected officials from the November 5th Elections. Also Measure O passed! An Ordinance was taken to the Council Meeting for its first reading to amend the current Ordinance where City Clerk and Treasurer were elected position.

Commission Vacancies:

Airport Commission – 1 vacant position

Library Commission – 2 vacant positions

Recreation Commission – 1 vacant position

All commissions meet quarterly on specified days the first week of the month in January, April, July, and October.

 

PUBLIC WORKS:

Leaf Pick Up:

The Public Works Staff will continue leaf pick up as time allows. Leaf piles must not have branches, brush, or other debris or they will not be removed.  Please make sure leaves are not blocking gutters preventing water flow.

Drainage Ditches:

The Conservation Camp Crew Members are continuing the annual cleaning of the Cities drainage ditches.  They will clear brush and debris from the local streambeds of both Jewett and Burch Creeks and the Blackburn Moon Drain.

Library Remodel:

The Corning Library is closed as construction for the Library Remodel Project has begun. Construction is anticipated to be complete by January 22nd.

Almond and Fig Street Rehabilitation Project:

VSS Inc., continues to work on the Almond and Fig Street Rehabilitation Project. City Staff and the Contractor have been working with the schools to limit the impacts of those who are dropping off and picking up students. The current phase of construction is complete with construction resuming by the middle of March.

Transportation Center Roof Replacement Project:

Four Seasons Roofing will begin the roof replacement project January 6th. Construction is anticipated to be complete by February 17th.

 

RECREATION:

Christmas Dance Recital:

Corning Recreation will be holding our annual Christmas Dance Recital this coming Monday, December 16th at 5:30pm at Rodger’s Theater. Performances will include our Baby Ballet Class, Dance to Impress Class, The Jr. Cardettes and special guests, The Corning High School Drill Team.

Breakfast with Santa:

The Breakfast with Santa program was great, thank you to Corning Rotary and New Life for their partnership in this program. This year we served over 100 meals. Thank you also goes out to Starbucks for donating coffee for the adults, Corning Library for offering a craft for the kids to do and joining us this year First 5, they handed out books to all the children and had a craft available. Thank you to our volunteers (our elves) for all their help.

Jr. Cardettes:

The Jr. Cardettes did an excellent job marching in the Christmas parade and sing along with the Corning Union High School choir at the tree lighting. They also were the special guest at the Corning Chamber Mixer on Thursday and got to perform for the audience.

Running Club:

Corning Rec is holding its first ever run. It will be 2.2 miles held on New Year’s Day Check in will be at 8:00 am and the run will start at 9:00 at City Hall. We will run through the streets of Corning in our 2025 New Year’s swag to bring a fresh new start to the year. Join us by registering at www.corning.org

 

PLANNING DEPARTMENT:

Housing Element:

The edited version of the 7th cycle Housing Element will be posted to the website by this weekend, please review.

 

POLICE DEPARTMENT:

Patrol:

In addition to responding to 121 calls for service, there were 154 officer-initiated incidents, including 56 traffic stops, and a total of 30 officer reports taken. Officers made 4 misdemeanor arrests (1 of which was a juvenile), 3 felony arrests, issued 18 parking citations, 6 infractions, and 2 misdemeanor citations during the period of December 5, 2024, through December 11, 2024.

Dispatch:

During the period of December 5, 2024, through December 11, 2024, our Dispatch Center received 262 inbound calls for service. In addition, they responded to 27 incoming 911 calls. All calls were answered within 10 seconds of their ring time.

Training:

All Officers continue to participate in POST Portal Training and Lexipol Daily Training Bulletins. Other POST online training continues for Patrol and Dispatch personnel.

Staffing

Corning Police Department is happy to report that we are fully staffed! We have the Chief, 4 Sergeants, 6 full time patrol Officers (plus 1 K-9 in training), 2 CSO’s, 1 Detective, 1 School Resource Officer/patrol Officer, 1 Admin Secretary, 4 Dispatchers, and 1 Dispatch/Records Supervisor. Thank you to our community for all of your support!

 

FIRE DEPARTMENT:

Corning Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) Call Volume:

The Corning Volunteer Fire Department responded to 18 calls for service last week, they were: 13 medicals, 1 fire, 1 traffic collision, 1 public service and 2 investigations.
