CITY MANAGER:

Meetings:

  • Next City Council Meeting: January 14, 2024, at 5:30 p.m.

Miscellaneous:

  • There are a number of events scheduled for the holiday season. Be sure to check out the City of Corning Recreation and Chamber of Commerce webpages and social media.
  • City Hall will be closed on Tuesday, December 24th and Wednesday, December 25th for the Christmas Holiday.
  • City Hall will be closed on Wednesday, January 1st, 2025, New Years Day Holiday.
  • The 2nd City Council Meeting in the Month of December (12/24/24) has been canceled.
  • Thank you to the Corning Chamber of Commerce and Public Works Department for their efforts to decorate the town in preparation for the Holiday Season and Events.
  • Finance Department Staff will begin to work on the finance software upgrade.
  • Staff continue work on a number of projects.

Commission Vacancies:

Airport Commission – 1 vacant position

Library Commission – 2 vacant positions

All commissions meet quarterly on specified days the first week of the month in January, April, July, and October.

PUBLIC WORKS:

Christmas Tree Disposal:

 A wood waste bin is available in front of the City Corporation Yard located at 1106 Butte Street for free disposal of live Christmas Trees only. Please remove all decorations. This service will be available through mid-January.

Leaf Pick Up:

The Public Works Staff will continue leaf pick up as time allows. Leaf piles must not have branches, brush, or other debris or they will not be removed.  Please make sure leaves are not blocking gutters preventing water flow.

Drainage Ditches:

The Conservation Camp Crew Members are continuing the annual cleaning of the Cities drainage ditches.  They will clear brush and debris from the local streambeds of both Jewett and Burch creeks and the Blackburn Moon Drain.

Library Remodel:

The Corning Library is closed as construction for the Library Remodel Project has begun. Construction is anticipated to be complete by January 22nd.

Almond and Fig Street Rehabilitation Project:

VSS Inc., continues to work on the Almond and Fig Street Rehabilitation Project. City Staff and the Contractor have been working with the schools to limit the impacts of those who are dropping off and picking up students. The current phase of construction is complete with construction resuming by the middle of March.

Transportation Center Roof Replacement Project:

Four Seasons Roofing will begin the roof replacement project January 6th. Construction is anticipated to be complete by February 17th.

BUILDING DEPARTMENT:

  • 12 Inspections performed
  • 6 new permit applications
  • 4 Perm its issued
  • 2 New Code Enforcement cases resolved
  • 11 Business Licenses issued in December

 

RECREATION:

Dance Recital:

The Corning Recreation Dance Recital was held on Monday evening. We had 4 groups of dancers and each and every one of them did a great job, we streamed it live on Facebook, you can go back and watch it if you’d like.

Running Club:

Corning Rec is holding its first ever run. It will be 2.2 miles held on New Year’s Day Check in will be at 8:00am and the run will start at 9:00am at City Hall. We will run through the streets of Corning in our 2025 New Year’s swag to bring a fresh new start to the year. Join us by registering at www.corning.org

PLANNING DEPARTMENT:

Housing Element:

The edited version of the 7th cycle Housing Element will be posted to the website by this weekend, please review.

 

POLICE DEPARTMENT:

Patrol:

In addition to responding to 110 calls for service, there were 71 officer-initiated incidents, including 19 traffic stops, and a total of 14 officer reports taken. Officers made 2 misdemeanor arrests (1 of which was a juvenile), 2 felony arrests, issued 1 parking citation, and 3 misdemeanor citations during the period of December 12, 2024, through December 18, 2024. 

Dispatch:

During the period of December 12, 2024, through December 18, 2024, our Dispatch Center received 246 inbound calls for service. In addition, they responded to 38 incoming 911 calls. All calls were answered within 10 seconds of their ring time.

Training:

Dispatcher Hudson attended a Dispatch Priming course in Vacaville. All Officers continue to participate in POST Portal Training and Lexipol Daily Training Bulletins. Other POST online training continues for Patrol and Dispatch personnel.

CPD Tips

A few holiday season reminders from CPD:

  • Keep all doors locked and windows closed while in or out of your vehicle.
  • Do not leave gifts or other valuables in plain sight in your vehicle; it is an unnecessary temptation for thieves.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings.
  • Avoid overloading yourself with packages whether on your person or in your vehicle.

 

FIRE DEPARTMENT:

Corning Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) Call Volume:

The Corning Volunteer Fire Department responded to 29 calls for service last week, they were: 23 medicals, 1 fire, 2 traffic collisions, 1 public service and 2 investigations.

Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser:

The CVFD would like to thank our awesome community for their amazing generosity.  Besides multiple donations for our Christmas basket program, you also attended our spaghetti dinner and street donations to a grand total of $4500.00 to the Phommathep family.
