CITY MANAGER:

 BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR NEW BUSINESSES OPENING ALONG SOLANO ST.

I ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO SUPPORT OUR LOCAL BUSINESSES!!

Meetings:

  • Next City Council Meeting: February 25, 2025, at 5:30 p.m.

Miscellaneous:

  • City Hall will be closed on Monday, February 17th for the President’s Day Holiday.
  • City Staff and Departments were represented at the Maywood School Career Fair on Thursday.
  • The Tuesday Night Market Ad Hoc met this week and will be getting information out to vendors with registration applications early next week.
  • We continue to meet with Tyler Technology to progress on the new accounting software project. We will begin phase 2.
  • Staff continue to meet with PG&E regarding power and natural gas for the Recreation Center and City Plaza.
  • Youth Soccer Organization is doing maintenance on the Lennox Soccer Fields. Soccer fields are to be closed from February 8th to February 24th for field maintenance.
  • I attended the Chamber of Commerce networking event on Wednesday morning. There was a great turnout, and I look forward to future events.
  • Code Enforcement has been actively working on abandoned vehicles and blight.

Commission Vacancies:

Airport Commission – 1 vacant position

Library Commission – 2 vacant positions

All commissions meet quarterly on specified days the first week of the month in January, April, July, and October.

 

PUBLIC WORKS:

 City Pool:

City Staff has started cleaning and preparing the pools for the upcoming pool season.  Minor maintenance at the pools will be completed in the upcoming weeks.

Drainage Ditches:

The Conservation Camp Crew Members are continuing the annual cleaning of the Cities drainage ditches.  They will clear brush and debris from the local streambeds of both Jewett and Burch creeks and the Blackburn Moon Drain.

Almond and Fig Street Rehabilitation Project:

VSS Inc., continues to work on the Almond and Fig Street Rehabilitation Project. City Staff and the Contractor have been working with the schools to limit the impacts of those who are dropping off and picking up students. The current phase of construction is complete with construction resuming by the middle of March.

Transportation Center Roof Replacement Project:

Four Seasons Roofing is continuing the roof replacement project. Construction is anticipated to be complete by March 3rd.

Items currently out to bid:

3-Year Striping Contract – Bid documents can be obtained through the City’s website at corning.org. All bids are due by 2:00 PM on February 25.

 

BUILDING DEPARTMENT:

25 Inspections performed

6 new permit applications

1 Code Enforcement property is currently being reviewed by Tehama County Courts.

12 Final Inspections Passed

 

RECREATION:

Basketball:

Please note that there will be no Corning Recreation Basketball games this weekend. A makeup game will be scheduled at the end of the season, ensuring the final game falls on March 15th. A big thank you to all the schools for generously providing their facilities!

Volleyball:

We’re excited to kick off our first youth volleyball clinic on Tuesday, February 18th.

New Classes:

In addition, we’ll be introducing three new classes starting in March: Wrestling, Art, and Ballet Folklorico. Be on the lookout for registration details!

 

PLANNING DEPARTMENT:

Housing Element:

Corning 7th Cycle Draft Housing Element is posted on our website at www.corning.org for review.

Corning City Council adopted the draft 7th cycle Housing Element at Tuesday’s meeting, staff will be submitting back to the state for a certification which could take up to 60 day’s.

Planning Commission Meeting:

There is a Planning Commission meeting on Tuesday February 18th at 6:30 pm in the Council Chambers, there is one item on the agenda which is a Lot Line Adjustment on Colusa Street.

Mobile Food Vendors:

Staff are currently working on the annual planning reports for the state and updating the mobile food vender yearly permits.

 

POLICE DEPARTMENT:

Patrol:

In addition to responding to 127 calls for service, there were 96 officer-initiated incidents, including 35 traffic stops, and a total of 18 officer reports taken. Officers made 3 misdemeanor arrests and 5 felony arrests (2 of which were juveniles), issued 2 misdemeanor citations, 2 parking citations, and 7 infractions during the period of February 6, 2025, through February 12, 2025.

Dispatch:

During the period of February 6, 2025, through February 12, 2025, our Dispatch Center received 266 inbound calls for service. In addition, they responded to 25 incoming 911 calls. All calls were answered within 10 seconds of their ring time.

Training:

All Officers continue to participate in POST Portal Training and Lexipol Daily Training Bulletins. Other POST online training continues for Patrol and Dispatch personnel.

 

FIRE DEPARTMENT:

Corning Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) Call Volume:

The Corning Volunteer Fire Department responded to 19 calls for service last week, they were: 13 medicals, 1 fire, 1 traffic collision and 4 public service.

 Message from the Chief:

Jeff Nelson was awarded the CVFD’s Firefighter of the Year for 2024.  Assistant Chief Nelson put in many hours on emergency calls, training, cooking and other projects at the fire hall.  He also spends countless hours with his first responder therapy dog, Blitz.
