CITY MANAGER:

Happy New Year! Wishing everyone the best in 2025!

Meetings:

  • Next City Council Meeting: January 14, 2025, at 5:30 p.m.

Miscellaneous:

  • City Hall will be closed on Monday, January 20th, 2025, Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday.
  • I attended the 25th Annual Economic Forecast Conference at CSU, Chico.
  • Staff is finalizing the asset inventory list that will be updated annually.
  • Staff continue to finalize the end of year reports to meet state and local agency requirements.
  • We look forward to kicking off the new accounting software project. A kickoff meeting is scheduled for next week.
  • Met with Corning High School Superintendent regarding future plans and projects.
  • Finalizing the required documents and paperwork for the past FEMA Flooding projects for Winter 2022 flood damage. Upon completion, we can expect funds to be sent and projects to be completed.
  • As we close out a successful 2024, the City of Corning remains dedicated to building on this year’s successes. Our accomplishments this year—ranging from improving processes to strengthening our teams, assets, and equipment—reflect the adaptability and progressive mindset of our staff. Starting 2025 fully staffed will position us for even greater achievements. We look forward to advancing our goals, embracing change, and delivering meaningful progress for our community.

 

CITY CLERK:

Commission Vacancies:

Airport Commission – 1 vacant position

Library Commission – 2 vacant positions

All commissions meet quarterly on specified days the first week of the month in January, April, July, and October.

 

PUBLIC WORKS:

Christmas Tree Disposal:

 A wood waste bin is available in front of the City Corporation Yard located at 1106 Butte Street for free disposal of live Christmas Trees only. Please remove all decorations. This service will be available through mid-January, approximately January 15th it will be removed.

Leaf Pick Up:

The Public Works Staff will continue leaf pick until Friday January 17th. Leaf piles must not have branches, brush, or other debris or they will not be removed.  Please make sure leaves are not blocking gutters preventing water flow.

Drainage Ditches:

The Conservation Camp Crew Members are continuing the annual cleaning of the Cities drainage ditches.  They will clear brush and debris from the local streambeds of both Jewett and Burch creeks and the Blackburn Moon Drain.

Library Remodel:

The Corning Library is closed as construction for the Library Remodel Project has begun. Construction is anticipated to be complete by January 24th.

Almond and Fig Street Rehabilitation Project:

VSS Inc., continues to work on the Almond and Fig Street Rehabilitation Project. City Staff and the Contractor have been working with the schools to limit the impacts of those who are dropping off and picking up students. The current phase of construction is complete with construction resuming by the middle of March.

Transportation Center Roof Replacement Project:

Four Seasons Roofing will begin the roof replacement project January 13th. Construction is anticipated to be complete by February 24th.

 

BUILDING DEPARTMENT:

  • 17 Inspections performed
  • 5 new permit applications
  • 3 New Code Enforcement cases resolved
  • Corning Foods Certificate of Occupancy has been issued. Their opening date is TBD by ownership.

 

RECREATION:

Daddy/Daughter Dance:

Corning Recreation will be holding their first Daddy/Daughter Dance on January 31st at Rodgers Theater, we will dance to the sounds of DJ Carlo Medrano. It’s sure to be an exciting evening.

Basketball:

Corning Recreation Basketball will be starting on January 18th and continuing into March we are ready to play.

 City Pool:

We are currently hiring our 2025 Pool Staff, Pool Manager, Assistant Manager and Lifeguards apply here https://www.corning.org/seasonal-lifeguard-application-form/ it will be open until January 31st.

 

PLANNING DEPARTMENT:

Tehama County Multi Jurisdiction Hazard Mitigation Plan

The Tehama County Multi Jurisdiction Hazard Mitigation Plan has been updated and is on the City of Corning website for review and comments, the comment period is open until January 31st. There will be a brief presentation at the Corning City Council meeting on January 14th at 5:30.

Housing Element:

Corning 7th Cycle Draft Housing Element is posted on our website at www.corning.org for review. At the Planning Commission meeting January 21st at 6:30 there will be a presentation given on the Housing Element; this meeting is open to the public.

 

POLICE DEPARTMENT:

Patrol:

In addition to responding to 113 calls for service, there were 151 officer-initiated incidents, including 40 traffic stops, and a total of 22 officer reports taken. Officers made 5 misdemeanor arrests and 2 felony arrests, issued 4 parking citations, and 6 misdemeanor citations, and 4 infractions during the period of January 2, 2025, through January 8, 2025.

Dispatch:

During the period of January 2, 2025, through January 8, 2025, our Dispatch Center received 266 inbound calls for service. In addition, they responded to 19 incoming 911 calls. All calls were answered within 10 seconds of their ring time.

Training:

All Officers continue to participate in POST Portal Training and Lexipol Daily Training Bulletins. Other POST online training continues for Patrol and Dispatch personnel.

 

FIRE DEPARTMENT:

Corning Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) Call Volume:

The Corning Volunteer Fire Department responded to 25 calls for service last week, they were: 22 medicals, 2 traffic collisions and 1 investigation.

Happy New Year, good time to check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and practice your escapes in case of fire!!!!
