CITY MANAGER:

HAPPY HEALTHY SUMMER EVENT – Saturday, June 29th from 10am to 1:00pm at the City Pool and Northside Park.  FREE EVENT for the family.  Free food, free swim, music, booths, resources, life jacket exchanges, and summer activity prizes.

Events:

  • June 29th at 10:00am: Healthy Happy Summer Event at the Corning City Pool.
  • July 4th : City Hall and Public Works Yard will be closed in observance of the Holiday.
  • July 9th at 6:30pm: City Council Meeting
  • July 16th at 5:30pm: City Council/Recreation Center and City Plaza Ad Hoc Meeting: CDBG Informational Meeting

Miscellaneous:

  • June 27th: Attended the Abandoned Vehicle Abatement Program Meeting as a representative for the City. This program offers voluntary abandoned and broken-down vehicles to be towed at no cost to the property owner or owner of the vehicle.
  • July 16th: Joint meeting between the City Council and the Recreation Center and City Plaza Ad Hoc to review final plans and receive information regarding the CSBG Grant.
  • Staff continue to work with Housing Tools on the Housing Element. We anticipate a draft document to begin the administrative review.
  • We continue to work on a new municipal water well to benefit residents. We continue to work with the Corning Healthcare District to discuss the location of the new City well on Healthcare District property by way of an easement.  There was consensus from the Directors.  We greatly appreciate the partnership and willingness to work together for the benefit of the community. This is funded by the Department of Warter Resources via a grant.
  • Staff continue to work on the City Recreation Center and Plaza Project. We are hopeful to have plans approved and bid documents to present at the July 23rd meeting tentatively.
  • The new carpet in the City Council Chambers has been installed and the project is complete.
  • The project to re-roof the City Waste-Water Treatment Plant has been completed.

CITY CLERK:

Commission Vacancies:

The City’s Airport, Recreation, and Library Commissions each have one vacant position.  If interested, please complete an application at https://www.corning.org/documents/commission-application/ and submit it to City Clerk Lisa Linnet at llinnet@corning.org.  All three commissions meet quarterly on specified days the first week of the month in January, April, July, and October.

 

PUBLIC WORKS:

Water Quality Report 2023:

The 2023 Water Quality Report/Consumer Confidence Report has been completed for the City of Corning’s water system.  A copy of the report can be found on the City’s website at: https://www.corning.org/documents/water-quality-report-2023/.

Community Event/Street Impact:

The Happy Healthy Summer event will take place this Saturday, June 29, 2024 at Northside Park and City Pool from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.  There will be no road closures for this event but be aware of traffic congestion and pedestrians on Colusa, West, Tehama and 6th Streets.

West Street School Connectivity Project:

Builder Solutions, Inc. continues to work on the West Street Connectivity Project.  Their remaining scope includes the crosswalk at the intersection of Solano Street and West Street. Construction of the crosswalks is anticipated to be completed by the end of June.

 

PLANNING:

7th Cycle Housing Element Update:

The Planning Department will be receiving the draft 7th Cycle Housing Element next week and will be posting it on the City’s website for public review.

 

RECREATION:

June 29th Healthy Happy Summer BBQ Event:

Corning Recreation will be participating/co-hosting the Healthy Happy Summer BBQ event happening on June 29th from 10:00am to 1:00pm located at the Corning City Pool.  We are sponsoring free swimming during the event.

 

POLICE DEPARTMENT:

Patrol:

In addition to responding to 143 calls for service, there were 74 officer-initiated incidents, including 20 traffic stops, and a total of 29 officer reports taken.  Officers made 2 felony arrests, 8 misdemeanor arrests, and issued 5 misdemeanor citations during the period of June 20, 2024 through June 26, 2024.

Dispatch:

During the period of June 20, 2024 through June 26, 2024 our Dispatch Center received 312 inbound calls for service.  In addition, they responded to 52 incoming 911 calls.  All calls were answered within 10 seconds of their ring time.

Training:

Officer Valencia attended an Interview and Interrogation course in Sacramento.  All Officers continue to participate in POST Portal Training and Lexipol Daily Training Bulletins.  Other POST online training continues for Patrol and Dispatch personnel.

FIRE DEPARTMENT:

Corning Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) Call Volume:

The Corning Volunteer Fire Department responded to 32 calls for service last week, they were:  3 fires, 21 medicals, 1 traffic collision, 2 investigations, and 5 public service.

Training:

Training for CVFD is live grass/wildland burning.  This burning is great hands-on live/controlled training with emphasis on safety and hydration.  Important factors include temperature, wind direction and speed and relative humidity.
