The Halloween activities were a hit. Thank you to all that were involved in the community for making those events happen!
Congratulations to Planning/Recreation Coordinator, Chrissy Meeds, on winning first place on the City Hall Pumpkin Decorating Contest with an awesome pirate ship!
Meetings:
- City Council Meeting: November 12, 2024, at 5:30 p.m.
Miscellaneous:
- All City Council Meeting will now begin at 5:30pm. We hope to see you there.
- Responses from HCD on the City Housing Element have been received and responded to. Staff worked diligently to quickly turn around any necessary responses.
- Staff Continue to work with developers on the Falcon Subdivision located directly east of Toomes Ave. between Colusa and North Streets.
- City Council approved funding for the K-9 Program for the police department.
- The grant submittal with Adams Ashby Group for the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) was submitted this week. This $3.3 million grant funding would be for the Recreation Center and City Plaza.

PUBLIC WORKS:
Leaf Pick Up:
Public Works Staff anticipates starting the leaf pick up program mid-November. Until then please do not pile your leaves in the roadway as we are anticipating rain and need to keep the gutters and storm drains clear.
Library Remodel:
Bidding has closed, and the City received five (5) total bids. The project will be awarded to the lowest responsive bidder at the Council meeting on November 12, 2024.
Items currently out to bid:
City of Corning Transportation Center Roof Project – Bid documents can be obtained through the City’s website at corning.org. All bids are due by 2:00 PM on November 5.
Almond and Fig Street Rehabilitation Project – Construction will begin on November 4th. City Staff have been working with Olive View Elementary and VSS International Inc. to develop a construction schedule that will have the least amount of impact on those who are dropping off and picking up students.
Hydrant Replacement:
The Public Works Crew worked with the Fire Department to identify Fire Hydrants needing replacement. As they work on replacing them, temporary water shutoffs will be in the surrounding areas. Notifications will be distributed prior to any water shutoffs.
Community Event/Street Impact:
Cal Fire’s fill the Boot Drive will take place on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at the intersection of Solano Street and Edith Avenue from 9:00am – 4:00pm, there will be no street closure for this event.
PLANNING:
7th Cycle Housing Element:
The state has started their review on our 7th cycle housing element expect more information to becoming forward soon.
Planning Commission:
The November Planning Commission scheduled for November 19th, we will be discussing an amendment to the City’s sign ordinance to add digital sign regulations, and we have received an application for a new food truck located at the old Glassblowers lot.
RECREATION:
Basketball:
Youth Basketball registration is open for youth K – 8 We will hold a draft on December 7th and the season will start in the middle of January. The registration deadline is Nov. 30.
Egg Hunt:
Corning Recreation partnered with American Fit Chix to hold a spooky Egg Hunt at Northside Park on Monday October 25th, we had about 40 youth register, there were two age groups, and the kids got to hunt eggs filled with fun prizes and candy. It was a good evening, and the kids had fun.
Holiday Season:
We are gearing up for the Holiday season with recreation we have our popular Santa letter program, our Breakfast with Santa, Our Christmas Craft Workshop and few other things happening this holiday season be sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram, so you don’t miss out on all the fun.
Jr. Cardettes:
The Jr. Cardettes walked in their very first parade, Homecoming on Friday, October 18th and then performed at the halftime of the JV football game, we took this week off to regroup and will get back to work next week learning a holiday routine and start practicing for our Basketball season.
POLICE DEPARTMENT:
Patrol:
In addition to responding to 140 calls for service, there were 57 officer-initiated incidents, including 12 traffic stops, and a total of 18 officer reports taken. Officers made 3 misdemeanor arrests, 5 felony arrests (2 of which were juveniles), issued 1 felony citation, 1 parking, and 3 misdemeanor citations during the period of October 24, 2024, through October 30, 2024.
Dispatch:
During the period of October 24, 2024, through October 30, 2024, our Dispatch Center received 275 inbound calls for service. In addition, they responded to 37 incoming 911 calls. All calls were answered within 10 seconds of their ring time.
Training:
All Officers continue to participate in POST Portal Training and Lexipol Daily Training Bulletins. Other POST online training continues for Patrol and Dispatch personnel.
Staffing:
Corning Police Department is pleased to announce that Officer Dannette Ross has accepted a new role as K-9 Handler. Stay tuned for more details!
FIRE DEPARTMENT:
Corning Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) Call Volume:
The Corning Volunteer Fire Department responded to 23 calls for service last week, they were: 16 medicals, 2 traffic collisions, 4 public service and 1 investigation.
Battle of The Badges:
The “Battle of The Badges” turned out to be just a skirmish with the Fire Department beating the Police Department 24 to 3. Thank You Corning, they were projecting 15 blood units and got 27-awesome!!!
Chief’s Message:
- The burn ban will be lifted November 1st. You will need a burn permit to burn in the city limits, get it at the Fire Department located at 814 5th
- Cold weather is upon us, make sure your chimneys and stove pipes are clean.
