CITY MANAGER:

Leaf pick up will begin Monday, November 18th

Events:

  • There are a number of events scheduled for the holiday season. Be sure to check out the City of Corning Recreation Chamber of Commerce webpages and social media.

Meetings:

  • Planning Commission Meeting: November 19, 2024, at 6:30 p.m.
  • City Council Meeting: November 26, 2024, at 5:30 p.m.

Miscellaneous:

  • City Hall will be closed on Thursday, November 28th and Friday, November 29th for the Thanksgiving Holiday.
  • The 2nd City Council Meeting in the Month of December (12/24/24) has been canceled.
  • All City Council Meeting will now begin at 5:30pm. We hope to see you there.
  • The Police Department swore in Officer Rodriguez on Wednesday. The newly promoted Detective McIntyre started this week in his new role. We are fortunate and thankful to have them serving our community.
  • Staff continues to work on finalizing changes on the updated Housing element. These are changes required by the State.
  • City Council approved funding and the Purchase of a K-9 for the Police Department and staff is coordinating the purchase of the K-9.
  • The grant submittal with Adams Ashby Group for the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) was submitted this week. This $3.3 million grant funding would be for the Recreation Center and City Plaza.

 

 

CITY CLERK:

Elections:

Tehama County Elections Department has released the 4th unofficial report on processed ballots. There is still a little over 9,000 ballots that are unprocessed. You can see the unofficial report here: https://www.tehama.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/4th-Unofficial-Report.pdf

 Commission Vacancies:

Airport Commission – 1 vacant position

Library Commission – 2 vacant positions

All commissions meet quarterly on specified days the first week of the month in January, April, July, and October.

 

PUBLIC WORKS:

Community Event/Street Impact:

Turkey Trot will be on Saturday, November 16, 2024.  North Street, between 1st Street and Marguerite Avenue will be closed beginning at approximately 6:00am until 11:00am. They will also be using additional areas surrounding the High School, but additional road closures will not occur.

 Leaf Pick Up:

Public Works Staff will be starting leaf pick up on November 18, 2024. Leaf piles must not have branches, brush, or other debris or they will not be removed.  Please make sure leaves are not blocking gutters preventing water flow.

Drainage Ditches:

The Conservation Camp Crew Members are continuing the annual cleaning of the Cities drainage ditches.  They will clear brush and debris from the local streambeds of both Jewett and Burch creeks and the Blackburn Moon Drain.

Water:

City Staff recently conducted an inventory of all water service lines, which is the pipe that connects your home, building, or other structure to the water main. The purpose of the inventory is to identify the material of these service lines and fittings, including the customer-owned side of the water service line.

Staff will be sending out notices to residents that have service lines that have been identified as an unknow material. Staff have started field inspections on all service lines of unknown material to identify the material classification and expect this process to be completed by December 2025.

Almond and Fig Street Rehabilitation Project:

VSS Inc., continues to work on the Almond and Fig Street Rehabilitation Project. City Staff and the Contractor have been working with the schools to limit the impacts of those who are dropping off and picking up students. The current phase of construction is anticipated to be complete by December 6th with construction resuming by the middle of March.

 

 

PLANNING:

Planning Commission Meeting:

A Planning Commission meeting will be held on Tuesday November 19th at 6:30 PM to discuss a new food truck located in the lot of the old Glassblowers and an Ordinance to add a digital sign chapter.

 

 

RECREATION:

Basketball:

Youth Basketball registration is open for youth K – 8 We will hold a draft on December 7th and the season will start in the middle of January. The registration deadline is November 30th.

Holiday Season:

We are gearing up for the Holiday season, we have the popular Santa Letter Program, Breakfast with Santa, Christmas Craft Workshop, and few other things happening this holiday season. Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram, so you don’t miss out on all the fun.

 

 

POLICE DEPARTMENT:

Patrol:

In addition to responding to 117 calls for service, there were 55 officer-initiated incidents, including 11 traffic stops, and a total of 17 officer reports taken. Officers made 5 misdemeanor arrests, 4 felony arrests, issued 4 parking citations, 2 infractions, and 6 misdemeanor citations during the period of November 7, 2024, through November 13, 2024.

Dispatch:

During the period of November 7, 2024, through November 13, 2024, our Dispatch Center received 231 inbound calls for service. In addition, they responded to 30 incoming 911 calls. All calls were answered within 10 seconds of their ring time.

Training:

All Officers continue to participate in POST Portal Training and Lexipol Daily Training Bulletins. Other POST online training continues for Patrol and Dispatch personnel.

Staffing:

Corning Police Department welcomes new Officer Joshua Rodriguez to our ranks! He began his Field Training Program on November 13.

 

FIRE DEPARTMENT:

Corning Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) Call Volume:

The Corning Volunteer Fire Department responded to 23 calls for service last week, they were: 17 medicals, 1 fire, 1 traffic collision, 3 public service and 1 hazardous condition.

Christmas Basket Program:

The holidays are coming, please support our Christmas Basket Program.  Last year we gave to 85 less fortunate families in Corning. Raffle tickets are available for $5.
