CITY MANAGER:

 Olive Festival & Car Show – Saturday, October 12th at Lennox Park

 Meetings:

  • Planning Commission Meeting: October 15, 2024, at 6:30 p.m.
  • City Council Meeting: October 22, 2024, at 5:30 p.m.

Miscellaneous:

  • Lori Sims achieved 20 years of service to the City of Corning on Friday. Thank you for your dedicated service!
  • All City Council Meeting will now begin at 5:30pm. We hope to see you there.
  • You won’t want to miss the Olive Festival and Car Show on Saturday at Lennox Park.
  • City Council approved funding for the K-9 Program for the police department.
  • The Police Department received their two new Police Interceptor (SUV) vehicles. Staff will coordinate to get them upfitted with a contractor. This will put the Police Fleet in a much better position moving forward.
  • On Monday I attended the Tehama County Landfill JPA meeting to advocate for the Household Hazardous Waste location in Corning.
  • I attended the Rotary Club Meeting on Wednesday as the program speaker. I provided an update regarding projects and work being done by the City and staff.
  • Wednesday evening Mayor Snow, Councilwomen Lomeli and I attended the 2X2X2 meeting. This meeting is with both School Districts and their representatives. It is an opportunity to information share and collaborate.
  • On Thursday we held a kickoff meeting with the Corning Elementary School District and Olive View School to coordinate efforts with the Street Project around the school.
  • Staff is finalizing the grant submittal with Adams Ashby Group to submit a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). This grant funding would be for the Recreation Center and City Plaza. The NOFA was released on Friday, August 30th. Subsequent meetings have been scheduled to prepare for the grant, a final list of qualifying items will be presented at the October 8th City Council Meeting.

 

CITY CLERK:

Ballot Drop Box:

The Tehama County Elections Office has five drop box locations for the November 5, 2024 Consolidated General Election.

The drop box locations are as follows:

  • SavMor Foods, – 590 Solano Street, Coning, CA 96021
  • Historic Courthouse Lobby – 633 Washington Street, Red Bluff, CA 96080
  • Food Maxx – 94 Belle Mill Rd., Red Bluff, CA 96080
  • Nu-Way Market – 8049 Highway 99E, Los Molinos, CA 96055
  • Tehama County Library – 545 Diamond Ave., Red Bluff, CA 96080

Commission Vacancies:

Airport Commission – 1 vacant position

Library Commission – 2 vacant positions

PUBLIC WORKS:

Community Event/Street Impact:

  • Corning Olive Festival:

The Corning Olive Festival and Car Show will take place this Saturday, October 12, 2024 at Corning Community Park, and Lennox Fields from 10:00am to 3:00pm.  There will be no road closures for this event but due to the anticipated attendance be aware of traffic congestion and pedestrians not only on Toomes and Houghton Avenues, but the surrounding side streets as well.

  • Corning High School Homecoming Parade

The Homecoming Parade will be next Friday, October 18, 2024. The parade will commence at the corner of Third and Solano and end at Toomes and Solano.  Solano Street will be closed from 2:00pm to 4:30pm.  The floats will line up along Marin Street prior to the parade and the parade will begin at 3:00pm.

Solano Street Valve Replacement:

Walberg Inc. will be replacing 3 valves on Solano Street next week. The work will take place from approximately 10pm-6am the next morning. Residents and business’ that may have their water affected by these replacements will be notified.

Items currently out to bid:

  • One (1) Articulating Boom Lift—Bid documents can be obtained through the City’s website at corning.org. All bids are due by 1:30 PM on October 22.

 

  • City of Corning Library Remodel – Bid documents can be obtained through the City’s website at corning.org. All bids are due by 1:30 PM on October 30.

 Hydrant Replacement:

The Public Works Crew worked with the Fire Department to identify Fire Hydrants needing replacement. As they work on replacing them, temporary water shutoffs will be in the surrounding areas. Notifications will be distributed prior to any water shutoffs.

 

PLANNING:

Planning Commission Meeting:

There is a Planning Commission meeting scheduled for Tuesday October 15th, where staff will be presenting a new tentative subdivision map for the Falcon Subdivision, a 28 single family moderate home parcel and the commission will also be discussing digital sign rules for a new upcoming ordinance.

 

RECREATION:

Olive Festival:

Corning Recreation will have a booth at the Olive Festival, come see us and make your own Corning Homecoming Football Pennant to wave at the parade and game on October 18th. Also, our Corning Jr. Cardettes will be performing for the first time this year at noon at the Olive Festival near the kid’s zone come cheer them on, they have been working very hard.

Corning Recreation Basketball:

Youth Basketball registration is open for youth K – 8 We will hold a draft on December 7th and the season will start in the middle of January. The registration deadline is Nov. 30.

Paint Party:

Corning Recreation has partnered with Belle & Brush to bring to the community some very creative paint parties, our first one is scheduled for October 26th at 5:30 PM at Rodgers Theater. Register today at https://corningrecreation.recdesk.com/Community/program

 

POLICE DEPARTMENT:

Patrol:

In addition to responding to 137 calls for service, there were 56 officer-initiated incidents, including 15 traffic stops, and a total of 13 officer reports taken. Officers made 1 misdemeanor arrest, 1 felony arrest, issued 2 infractions, 1 misdemeanor citation, and 1 parking citation, during the period of October 3, 2024, through October 9, 2024.

Dispatch:

During the period of October 3, 2024, through October 9, 2024, our Dispatch Center received 281 inbound calls for service. In addition, they responded to 38 incoming 911 calls. All calls were answered within 10 seconds of their ring time.

Training:

Dispatchers Fountain and Duncan attended the RIMSCON convention in South Lake Tahoe and Sergeant Curiel attended the Supervisor Field Training in Sacramento.

Meetings:

Chief Bassett and Admin Smith attended the Annual Supplemental Law Enforcement Oversight Committee Meeting in Red Bluff.

News:

We are pleased to announce the return of our K-9 program after 18 months. With increased staffing, we are now ready to resume this valuable initiative. Three qualified candidates are set to undergo the K-9 Handler interview process. Once a handler is selected, they will begin the process of pairing with their K-9 partner.

 

FIRE DEPARTMENT:

 Corning Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) Call Volume:

The Corning Volunteer Fire Department responded to 29 calls for service last week, they were: 20 medicals, 3 fires, 1 traffic collision and 5 public service.

Chief’s Message:

Saturday from 7-10am the CVFD is hosting a pancake breakfast to kick off the Olive Festival-come enjoy $8.00 donation.
