CITY MANAGER:

CORNING HIGH SCHOOL HOMECOMING EVENTS – Friday, October 18th

Meetings:

  • City Council Meeting: October 22, 2024, at 5:30 p.m.

Miscellaneous:

  • All City Council Meeting will now begin at 5:30pm. We hope to see you there.
  • City Council approved funding for the K-9 Program for the police department.
  • The Police Department received their two new Police Interceptor (SUV) vehicles. Staff will coordinate to get them upfitted with a contractor. This will put the Police Fleet in a much better position moving forward.
  • On Monday the City of Corning tabled at the Corning High School Career Fair. It was a great opportunity to educate the students about all the great career opportunities at the City of Corning.
  • On Tuesday the pre-construction meeting for the Library Project was open to contractors. There was a good turnout from various contractors.
  • On Thursday I attended the NCCSIF meeting in Rocklin.
  • Staff is finalizing the grant submittal with Adams Ashby Group to submit a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). This grant funding would be for the Recreation Center and City Plaza. The NOFA was released on Friday, August 30th. Subsequent meetings have been scheduled to prepare for the grant, a final list of qualifying items will be presented at the October 8th City Council Meeting.
  • The Tehama County Job Training Center is working hard to connect with employees being affected by the closure of TA Truck Stop. We are grateful for their commitment to the community. Folks can also access information at https://city-of-corning.10web.me/

Commission Vacancies:

Airport Commission – 1 vacant position

Library Commission – 2 vacant positions

PUBLIC WORKS:

Solano Street Valve Replacement:

Walberg Inc. replaced 3 valves on Solano Street this week.

Items currently out to bid:

City of Corning Library Remodel – Bid documents can be obtained through the City’s website at www.corning.org . All bids are due by 1:30 PM on October 30.

City of Corning Transportation Center Roof Project – Bid documents can be obtained through the City’s website at www.corning.org . All bids are due by 2:00 PM on November 5.

One (1) Articulating Boom Lift – Bidding has closed, and the City received eight (8) total bids. The procurement will be awarded to the lowest competent bidder at the Council meeting on October 22.

Almond and Fig Street Rehabilitation Project

Construction will begin on November 4th.  City Staff has been working with Olive View Elementary and the awarded contractor, VSS, International, to develop a construction schedule that will have the least amount of impact on those who are dropping off and picking up students.

Hydrant Replacement:

The Public Works Crew worked with the Fire Department to identify Fire Hydrants needing replacement. As they work on replacing them, temporary water shutoffs will be in the surrounding areas. Notifications will be distributed prior to any water shutoffs.

 

PLANNING:

Planning Commission Meeting:

The Planning Commission made a recommendation to the City Council to approve Tentative Map 2024-1002 in a 4-0 vote at last night’s meeting. Tentative Map 2024-1002 proposes to establish 28 new Single-Family Residents on a lot directly east of Toomes Avenue between Colusa and North Streets.

 

RECREATION:

Jr Cardettes:

Corning Recreation will be participating in the Homecoming Parade, the Jr Cardettes will walk behind the Corning Union High School Drill Team and then will be performing during half time of the JV Football game.

Corning Recreation Basketball:

Youth Basketball registration is open for youth K – 8. We will hold a draft on December 7th and the season will start in the middle of January. The registration deadline is Nov. 30.

Paint Party:

Corning Recreation has partnered with Belle & Brush to bring to the community some very creative paint parties, our first one is scheduled for October 26th at 5:30 PM at Rodgers Theater. Register today at https://corningrecreation.recdesk.com/Community/program  

 

POLICE DEPARTMENT:

Patrol:

In addition to responding to 145 calls for service, there were 87 officer-initiated incidents, including 40 traffic stops, and a total of 28 officer reports taken. Officers made 15 misdemeanor arrests (2 of which were juveniles), 2 felony arrests, issued 4 infractions, 2 unclassified, and 6 misdemeanor citations during the period of October 10, 2024, through October 16, 2024.

Dispatch:

During the period of October 10, 2024, through October 16, 2024, our Dispatch Center received 304 inbound calls for service. In addition, they responded to 31 incoming 911 calls. All calls were answered within 10 seconds of their ring time.

Training:

All Officers continue to participate in POST Portal Training and Lexipol Daily Training Bulletins. Other POST online training continues for Patrol and Dispatch personnel.

News:

Three candidates have been interviewed for our K-9 Handler position. Once we have an Officer selected, we will make an official announcement. We are very excited for the return of our K-9 program!

 

FIRE DEPARTMENT:

Corning Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) Call Volume:

The Corning Volunteer Fire Department responded to 18 calls for service last week, they were: 12 medicals, 4 fires and 2 investigations.

Chief’s Message:

  • Thank you to all who attended our pancake breakfast last Saturday.
