CITY MANAGER:

Events:

  • Trunk or Treat: Saturday October 26, 2024, at the Northside Park, 1414 Colusa Street from 5:00pm – 7:00pm. FREE FOR ALL!
  • Halloween Egg Hunt: October 28, 2024, Northside Park, 1414 Colusa Street from 6:00pm – 7:00pm. REGISTRATION REQUIRED.
  • Treat Street: October 31, 2024, Solano Street, 2:00pm – 5:00pm. FREE FOR ALL!

 Meetings:

  • Planning Commission Meeting: October 15, 2024, at 6:30 p.m.
  • City Council Meeting: November 12, 2024, at 5:30 p.m.

Miscellaneous:

  • All City Council Meeting will now begin at 5:30pm. We hope to see you there.
  • There are a number of Halloween Events within the community. Be sure to join the fun!
  • Staff Continue to work with developers on the Falcon Subdivision located directly east of Toomes Ave. between Colusa and North Streets.
  • Staff met with our insurance joint powers (JPA) to review claims, training opportunities and processes.
  • Finance Staff met with Tyler Technologies regarding Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Software.
  • City Council approved funding for the K-9 Program for the police department.
  • City Council approved for the Detective position to be hired by the Police Department. The department is excited about this addition to their staffing.
  • Staff has finalized the grant submittal with Adams Ashby Group to submit a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) on October 29th. This $3.3 million grant funding would be for the Recreation Center and City Plaza.

Airport Commission – 1 vacant position

Library Commission – 2 vacant positions

PUBLIC WORKS:

Items currently out to bid:

  • City of Corning Library Remodel – Bid documents can be obtained through the City’s website at corning.org . All bids are due by 2:00pm on October 30th.

 

  • City of Corning Transportation Center Roof Project – Bid documents can be obtained through the City’s website at corning.org . All bids are due by 2:00pm on November 5th.

Almond and Fig Street Rehabilitation Project:

Construction will begin on November 4th.  City Staff have been working with Olive View Elementary and VSS International Inc. to develop a construction schedule that will have the least amount of impact on those who are dropping off and picking up students.

Hydrant Replacement:

The Public Works Crew worked with the Fire Department to identify Fire Hydrants needing replacement. As they work on replacing them, temporary water shutoffs will be in the surrounding areas. Notifications will be distributed prior to any water shutoffs.

 Community Event/Street Impact:

  • Trunk or Treat will take place this Saturday October 26, 2024, at the Northside Park, 1414 Colusa Street from 5:00pm – 7:00pm.
  • Cal Fire’s Fill the Boot Drive will take place this Saturday November 2, 2024, at the intersection of Solano Street and Edith Avenue from 9:00am – 4:00pm, there will be no street closure.
  • Treat Street will be on Thursday, October 31, 2024, from 2:00pm to 5:00pm. Solano Street will be closed from 1:30pm to approximately 5:30pm for the event between 3rd Street and West Street for the safety of the participants.

 

PLANNING:

 Falcon Subdivision:

City Council approved the Tentative Map 2024-1002 in a 5-0 vote on Tuesday’s meeting. Tentative Map 2024-1002 proposes to establish 28 new Single-Family Residents on a lot directly east of Toomes Ave. between Colusa and North Streets.

 

RECREATION:

Jr Cardettes:

Corning Recreation participated in the Homecoming Parade, and the Jr Cardettes performed during half time of the JV Football game. Great job to all the dancers and their instructors!

 Corning Recreation Basketball:

Youth Basketball registration is open for youth K – 8 We will hold a draft on December 7th and the season will start in the middle of January. The registration deadline is Nov. 30.

Paint Party:

Corning Recreation has partnered with Belle & Brush to bring to the community some very creative paint parties, our first one is scheduled for October 26th at 5:30pm at Rodgers Theater. Register today at https://corningrecreation.recdesk.com/Community/program  

 

POLICE DEPARTMENT:

 Patrol:

In addition to responding to 126 calls for service, there were 74 officer-initiated incidents, including 24 traffic stops, and a total of 22 officer reports taken. Officers made 3 misdemeanor arrests, 6 felony arrests, issued 5 infractions, 4 parking, and 4 misdemeanor citations during the period of October 17, 2024, through October 23, 2024.

 Dispatch:

During the period of October 17, 2024, through October 23, 2024, our Dispatch Center received 299 inbound calls for service. In addition, they responded to 37 incoming 911 calls. All calls were answered within 10 seconds of their ring time.

 Training:

Sergeant Portillo attended an Academy Instructor Certification Course (AICC) in Redding. All Officers continue to participate in POST Portal Training and Lexipol Daily Training Bulletins. Other POST online training continues for Patrol and Dispatch personnel.

Staffing

Corning Police Department is pleased to announce that Officer Dannette Ross has accepted a new role as K-9 Handler. Stay tuned for more details!

 

FIRE DEPARTMENT:

Corning Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) Call Volume:

The Corning Volunteer Fire Department responded to 24 calls for service last week, they were: 21 medicals, 2 public service and 1 investigation.

 Chief’s Message:

 

  • The burn ban is still in effect and will continue until a substantial rain event.
  • Warming fires in a fire pit are allowed but, only firewood, no trash or brush.  No burn barrels!!
